In vitro studies utilizing extract of sea cucumber to elucidate its effects on cell viability and functional activity were performed. It was found an inverse relationship between sea cucumber extract concentration and its effect on osteoblast cell viability. There was a trend towards increased osteoblast cell function in the presence of sea cucumber extract. Sea cucumber extract appears to potentially promote osteoblast functional activity. Further research is essential to investigate the possible role of sea cucumber extract as a systemic modulator of human bone metabolism.
